This song hasn't been getting the
love it deserves, so I'm gonna try to do it a little justice. Any
corrections would be dandy (can't always be 100% sure about
everything), and that damn lyric change about the book at the last
pre-chorus I still can't figure out. Also during the chorus, sometimes
I think I hear "a long lonely alone" instead of "alone,
lonely, alone." I don't know which is right; what do you guys
think? anyway, here y'are:

Isn't it sad
I'm immune
And I thought it was cute
For you to kiss
My purple black eye
Even though I caught it from you
I still think we're serious

Lyrics: Woody Guthrie

Thanks to "Mel" for pointing out the "Roses"
connection
This song has an interesting relationship with a song recorded for
Mermaid Avenue Vol I, that was called When The Roses Bloom Again,
basically the songs share the same melody, "Roses" was
featured in the documentary "Man In The Sand", which showed
the making of the "Mermaid Avenue" album from Billy Bragg's
perspective. Sean Slone emailed me to say it later appeared on Sally
Timms' album "Cowboy Sally's Twilight Laments". The song was
not included on Mermaid Avenue as it was found the lyrics were not
written by Woody Guthrie. Interesting Harry Brown did some research
and found the following:
Title: I'll be with you when the roses bloom again.
First Line: They are roaming in the gloaming, where the roses are in
bloom
Chorus: When the roses bloom again beside the river
Music by: Will D. Cobb & Gus Edwards.
Words by: Will D. Cobb & Gus Edwards.
P/P/D: New York : E. A. Mills, c1901.
Location: SPC, KIRK PS 1900-1913

Whether this is the same song lyric, or a reworking of a traditional
lyric theme is unknown. Whilst Blood Of The Lamb has the same melody
as Where The Roses Bloom Again, the key and chord arrangement are
different but it is clearly the same song root. I guess that they
reworked it when they discovered the lyric problem with
"Roses". Interestingly "Blood of the Lamb" music
is credited to Bennett/Tweedy while "Roses" music was
credited to Tweedy alone.

The Roses Bloom Again (Wilco)
From "Mermaid Avenue Sessions"
Posted by Shoerider and transcribed by Harry Brown
Key amended by Warren Owen after hearing the now definitive version as
played by Wilco on the Oxford Sampler
This song was featured in the documentary "Man In The Sand",
which showed the making of the "Mermaid Avenue" album from
Billy Bragg's perspective. Sean Slone emailed me to correct the song
title, and to say
it later appeared on Sally Timms' album "Cowboy Sally's Twilight
Laments". It later surfaced on the CD sampler that came with
Oxford American Magazine in Summer 2000 and then on the soundtrack to
Chelsea Walls
The song was not included on Mermaid Avenue as it was found the lyrics
were not written by Woody Guthrie. Interesting Harry Brown did some
research and found the following:
Title: I'll be with you when the roses bloom again.
First Line: They are roaming in the gloaming, where the roses are in
bloom
Chorus: When the roses bloom again beside the river
Music by: Will D. Cobb & Gus Edwards.
Words by: Will D. Cobb & Gus Edwards.
P/P/D: New York : E. A. Mills, c1901.
Location: SPC, KIRK PS 1900-1913
Kirk Collection, Indiana State University
Whether this is the same song lyric, or a reworking of a traditional
lyric theme is unknown.
The story gets more interesting with the release of Mermaid Avenue Vol
II. A song on that album is called Blood Of The Lamb. It has the same
melody as Where The Roses Bloom Again, the key and chord arrangement
are different
from the one below but it is clearly the same song root. I guess that
they reworked it when they discovered the lyric problem with
"Roses". Interestingly "Blood of the Lamb" music
is credited to Bennett/Tweedy while "Roses" music was
credited to Tweedy alone.
The Sally Timms version has the same progression in a different key
chords are F#m Bm D A x2 for verse, D Bm A F#m x 2 for chorus although
probably best played with a capo on 2 and Em Am C G x2, C Am G Em x2
Verse 1
They were [Am]strolling in the gloaming
Where the [Dm]roses were in bloom
A [F]soldier and his sweetheart lady [C]true
And their [Am]hearts were filled with sorrow
And their [Dm]thoughts were of tomorrow
As she [F]pinned a rose upon his coat of [C]blue
Chorus 1
Do not [F]ask me love to linger
When you [Dm]know not what to say
For [C]duty calls your sweetheart's name [Am]again
And your [F]heart need not be sighing
If [Dm]I be among the dying
I'll be [C]with you when the [F]roses bloom [C]again
Verse 2
When the roses bloom again
Beside the river
And the mockingbird has sung his sweet refrain
In the days of auld lang syne
I'll be with you sweetheart mine
I'll be with you when the roses bloom again
Verse 3
Mid the rattle of the battle
Came a whisper soft and low
A soldier who had fallen in the fray
I am dying, I am dying
And I know I'll have to go
But I want to tell you
Before I pass away
Chorus 2
There's a far and distant river
Where the roses are in bloom
A sweetheart who is waiting there for me
And it's there I pray you take me
I've been faithful, don't forsake me
I'll be with her when the roses bloom again
