I Do (Whiskeytown)
From: "Stranger's Almanac" (1998 - Outpost)
Posted by Ironman and transcribed by Unknown
This song is tricky as it has horns,a guitar lead with little of a
rhythm section. As always,I'm sat here with an acoustic guitar ( with
no horn section ).. What I did was find a little rhythm riff which
works quite nicely. The riff I play is simply based around an E F#m
change. Strumming an E for two beats, letting the F#m ring out. The
Asterisk in the lyrics indicates the point you start playing the
little riff. But Someone suggested ( rightly ) that rather than an F#m
it should be x44200 ( low to high strings ), this chord is an
F#m7add11
The song basically is the same verse/chorus 3 times, except the final
time there is no "says I-I-I-I miss you" at the end.
The intro is a Steve Cropper-esque line that is hammering on the 3rd
from the 2nd (5th string) under the top of an E bar chord at the 9th
fret (A shape bar chord) and then doing the same under an open A chord
at the 2nd fret (hammering on the 3rd, of A from the 2nd)

Notes: Originally the C9 in the Chorus was a plain C, then someone
suggested playing C9(x32033) instead of the C. I agreed, it sounded
good on the chorus, but I decided to leave the verses as a plain C,
you may choose to play those as C9's as well. He also sent in the
following banjo riff after each Em7 in the verse...
e-0--0--0--0-
b-3--1--0--0- right into the G
g----------2-
INTRO:
[G G Em7 Em7 G G Em7 Em7]
Well, ex[G]cuse me if I break my own [Em7]heart

Note: there is a little sort of picked riff played often throughout
the song its based on A G D movement, I haven't worked it out exactly
( I haven't got the patience, or the skill ) I tend to pick around an
A to A7 change, then a G to Gm change, finishing with a D releasing
the top E string (Dsus2) and hammering back on the second fret. It
changes a little on repetition but is basically the same progression.
For the basis of the transcription we will call it "Riff 1"
I think that riff might be sliding the 3rd string from the 2nd to 4th
fret, then hitting the 2nd string on the third fret, then (maybe)
pulling of the 2nd fret to open string on the third, fourth, and maybe
fifth string, or going straight into the "C" or
"G" (root note) chord from the fourth string.
[G]So [Em]factory girl, she [A]listens for the [G]sound of her daddy's
[Em]engine
'til the [A]work bell sounds and [D]she leaves town
Riff 1 twice
[G]Know the summers [Em]here are [A]hot, all she [G]seems to do is [Em]work
and sleep
and [A]wish that she was [D]still with you
Riff 1 twice
[C]No you [G]don't know where she [D]is
Lying [C]in her mother's [G]bed
Or [C]who she's sleeping [G]with
Riff 1 x 4, then G Em A G Em A D
Riff 1 x 4 or 5 times, all this over a harmonica.
[G]All the [Em]kids would laugh at [A]her
Because [G]she seemed so sweet and [Em]pure
I [A7]took this shift be[D]cause of her
Riff 1 x 2
[G]No I've [Em]never said a [A]word
I once [G]smiled and looked at [Em]her
'til the [A]shift boss said now get [D]back to work
Riff 1 x 4
[C]Now I [G]don't know where she [D]is
Or [C]who's bed she's sleeping [G]in
Or [C]what man she's sleeping [G]with
Finish with picking over a D G repeated change

The "break" played prior to the chorus I usually omit but
when I’m daring
I’ll start with a G (334553) and work that cord up the neck: A (5th

again (15th).

Capo on 4
Intro just hangs on G, hammering on the A string.
Verse:
G
Well the banks of the river went through my hometown
G C
Born on the dirt roads, and I scraped my knees
G
Well they packed the roads eventually
G C
With neon signs and car dealerships and diners
Chorus:
D Emin C
The soldiers fill the hotels on the weekends
D Emin C D G
I saw the pretty women as I walked through town
Verses 2&3:
I moved away soon as I turned sixteen
Figured I was old enough to go and work a job
Well I flooded down mainstreet pools(?) of carlights
Overcame me wishin' I was still back home
Jacksonville's a city with a hopeless streetlight
Seems like your lucky if it ever changes red to green
I was born in abundance of inherited sadness
With a 50 cent picture frame bought at a five and dime
Final chorus(chords same as the first):
I ended up a soldier on the weekend
Looking for a vacancy I wasn't able to find
Somewhere the night sky hangs like a blanket
I shoot it with my capgun just to make it
seem like stars

Notes: Not sure what the correct name for the Dsus4/E chord is, its
similar to an Asus4 but seems to have the fingering xx2233. Which is
basically the Dsus4 chord, but with an E as it lowest (bass) note..
Intro and verse
You anchor your pointer finger and ring finger on the Dsus2 chord
(this is the regular D chord with the high E string open). You use
your middle finger to play the bass notes in this order...(F# G B A)
all while picking the higher strings you have anchored.

And I can't [F#]touch what I can't [A]see
And do you [E]hear that lonesome [A] cryin'
Though' I [E]made it stop it's [A]singin'
But my [F#]hands lay here on the [A]bottle
And I just [F#]drank till my [A]heart 'll be
too drunk to [E]dream
So [A]baby you can leave if you wan[E]na
[G]Their aint no drinking when the bottle is [D]dry
[A]Sugar you can leave if you want [E]to
[G]I ain't got no more tears to [D]cry
Do you [E]hear that lonesome [A]shuffle
Of my [E]feet walking outta the [A]bar
And I [F#]stumble down the [A]same damn streets
[F#]my daddy done stumbled [A]before
So [A]baby you can leave if you wan[E]na
[G]All the flowers in your garden have [D]died
[A]Baby I'm g'have to warn [E]you
[G]I ain't got no more tears to [D]cry
Well [A]sugar you can leave if you want [E]to
[G]Their aint no drinking when the bottle is [D]dry
[A]Baby I'm g'have to warn [E]you

C G C G (play this G into the verse)
Well we tried to (C)find something
Something to hold on to
I thought it was you 'cause I'm (G)sick and tired
Of (C)trying to make something
Something out of nothing
I guess that you were bluffing
Now I (G)think I'm losing my (Am)mind
This pain in my (C)heart
Was it (F)worth the price?
This pain in my (Am)heart
Was it (C)worth the time that I (G)wasted on (F)you?
You're giving me the (G)top dollar blues
C G C G
And I gave you it (C)all, all
All that I could give you
You've taken what I've given
And (G)thrown it all (C)away
Like it was nothing
Never meant nothing
Now I'm left with nothing
What an (G)awful price I've (Am)paid
This pain in my (C)heart
Was it (F)worth the price?
This pain in my (Am)heart
Was it (C)worth the time I (G)wasted on (F)you?
You're giving me the (G)top dollar blues
C G C G
(Am)I've bet all my (C)money and that's how it (F)goes
You ran a good (Am)race
But you (C)lost just by a (G)nose
It's (F)true
Baby, you're giving me the (G)top dollar blues (C)
The top dollar (G)blues
I gave you it (C)all, all
All that I could give you
The top dollar (G)blues (C)
Top dollar blues (G)

Notes:
Just an easy trick to make it sound like the album: lift your birdy
finger off and on the 4th string while strumming, then on the second
time lift your birdy on and off and use your pinky to hit the 4string
3 fret.
in other word on the fourth string while strumming:

[G]For a train back[Asus4] out of town.
[D]Away from [D]you.
[D]All the lights that [D]disappear
[G]In the tunnels [Asus4]way down here.
[D]It’s quite a [D]view.
[Em7]Sometimes [D]I wish [G]I were deaf[G].
Then [Em7]I wouldn’t [D]hear the [G]words you say.
Under [D]your [G]breath[Asus4].
Under [D]your [G]breath[Asus4].
Locked away in a room on the phone
With someone who just thinks out loud.
Thoughts you found, the right to leave.
Think of the things you used to me when
I went out
Bridge:
[Bm]Anything [Bm/A]that you put on me
All the [G]things, your [D]memories, [Em7]you [G]believed.
[Bm]Leave my mind, ‘cause [Bm/A]I can’t say anything,
the [G]sick heart’s [D]caution, [Em7]two parts [G]pain, one part’s
[D]you again.
