I don't hear Laurel Canyon with this, as all reviewers seemed to suggest. Don't really know what it sounds like ... really like nothing I've ever heard before. And I like it.
- Ranchhand - (9) A late year find for me (early December) but it quickly shot to the top...this is the kind of music I've been waiting for. I've spent the last few years thinking I'm some sort of a freak for loving 70s lite rock as much as I do, but I find now that I'm not the only one and Midlake does it even better than any of the baby boomers did, bringing an organic quality to the perfect harmonies, ringing acoustic guitars and beautiful melodies. - Beldo - (8) A sniff of Fleetwood Macs Rhiannon here, the feel of Blue Oyster Cults Don’t Fear The Reaper there, a classic 70s soft rock album which would sit comfortably with those albums and yet sounds totally original . - Boxcar Trev - (5) This band from Denton, TX blindsided me…..not your typical lyrics, “the mountaineers gathered tender….”. It’s quiet, melodic and powerful. - Erschen - (2) |

The best Americana songwriter going. "Rural Route" is one of the best songs of '06. It's a crime how underappreciated this guy is in every circle. He's too raw for
Clear Channel, but he's too straightforward for a lot of alt-country fans. Doesn't matter, he's happy with his niche and it shows on this stellar release. Chris' best album since his debut.
- Trailer - (7) Killer Album. - Roy Mcroy - (7) Howard (10), Pearl Snap Man (8), Drive by Tornado (6), Desolation Row (6), The Lushus (5), Mikemc (3)

Jay Farrar's quietly on a roll. - Tracer - (7) Rumour has it that Anders Parkers and Jay Farrar have upped Robert Johnson’s partnership with the Devil – his soul for music infamy by forming their own partnership, that with Gob Iron, the Devil’s harmonica playing brother. Parker and Farrar bring old blues classics back to life by covering songs by Rev. J.M. Gates (Death’s Black Train Is Coming), Stephen Collins Foster (Hard Times Come Again No More), Josh White (Silicosis Blues), Carter Stanley (Wayside Tavern), A.J. Buchanan (Death Is Only a Dream), A.P. Carter (East Virginia Blues) and Albert Rae Price (Little Girl and Dreadful Snake); each song intertwined with nine instrumentals, the Devil’s work, all without harmonica. - Gas OJ - (6) Excellent interpretations of traditional folk songs. Key tracks "Death's Black Train", "Hard Times", "Hills of Mexico", "East VA Blues" & "Buzz & Grind". - Roy Mcroy - (6) |
