44   Eric Rhame   Long Cold Nights 27 5
Great Folk record. Good lyrics. - Wes - (7)

Long Cold Nights intertwines beautifully, each song as scenic as a drive along Duluth’s Seven Bridges Road, winding its way through forests of pine and birch. Minnesotan folk singer/songwriter Eric Rhame's storytelling begins with Spider John, a tribute to fellow Minnesotan John Koerner, who helped shape the course of folk music. Greg Brown’s influence is also evident on Long Cold Nights, one of the year’s best folk albums. More Things Change with Danny McIntosh’s excellent harmonica playing conjures Brown’s Spring & All. The title track, Long Cold Nights is brought to perfection with the added cello, adding warmth to Eric's acoustic playing. The production (Wayne Murphy) is invaluable; Eric Rhame's Kelly Joe Phelps rasp like voice on Can’t Stay Here Anymore is succeeded with Way Out In the Country and On The Road. This year’s midwest winter will be the warmest on record thanks to Eric Rhame's Long Cold Nights. - Gas OJ - (2)

Best pop album of the year, and the best album yet by Joe Pernice and Co. - Melt - (9)

Just good stuff. - Murmur - (2)

My pure pop album of the year, a big return to form after last years disappointing Discover A Lovelier You. The bottom end has been restored and as always it’s a classic collection of all that was great in ( predominantly 60s) pure pop. - Boxcar Trev - (1)

44   Sufjan Stevens   Songs For Christmas 27 4
Pure enjoyment--the beauty and joy of Christmas time in 5 disks. - FriendOf - (9)

I'm not one for Christmas music, but this collection is just as listenable as all his other stuff. I honestly believe that he is the most talented musician right now. - Wilcoduck - (8)

An amazing collection of carols and original material which tracks his evolution as a top class songwriter over the past five years. Not every tracks a nugget but at 42 songs, theres plenty of gold. The packaging harks back to vinyl days; Sufjan homing in on the season of goodwill and giving to others. - Boxcar Trev - (7)

48   Alejandro Escovedo   The Boxing Mirror 25 5
Criminally underappreciated album. Saw Alejandro play most of these songs with full band at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and he was the class of the whole weekend. So great to see him back in health and in such fine performance mode. This album has been stuck in my player since. - Nortwoods - (6)

A real triumph especially when you consider what he has been through. More like his extraordinary electric live shows than Man Under The Influence and a return to his early 90s rock albums. - Boxcar Trev - (2)
